The fith mural

For the fifth mural in the Poetry Unbound series, Slovak artist Patricia Koysova incorporated a poem by Shannon Sullivan into a rich and strong mural.

The poem by Shannon Sullivan is deeply rooted in the site-specific character of the mural’s location: a cubic concrete structure resembling a garage or warehouse, situated on the grounds of the long-established Tennis Club Philosopher. The site lies at the heart of a neighbourhood where contrasting layers coexist - older residential buildings alongside new high-rise developments, traces of socialist-era public art next to contemporary elite living estates.

Both poem and mural respond directly to this complex urban context. In this successful international collaboration, leading Slovak fine artist Patricia Koysova translates the poem’s message into a powerful visual language. Through kinetic energy, abstract expressionist gestures, and sweeping brushstrokes, the mural commands attention across generations.

Together, poem and painting transform what was once a nearly dilapidated and abandoned concrete object into a source of inspiration. The intervention creates a visual and conceptual landmark, visible from multiple vantage points: the tennis courts, a children’s playground, the public park, the windows of a neighbouring arts school, and even from the many floors of a nearby postmodern high-rise estate.

As a work of poetry published in public space, the project offers a unique example of international cooperation - unprecedented in the neighbourhood. It demonstrates how a truly site-specific artwork can reshape public perception and redefine the public domain, revealing the transformative potential of art embedded in its environment.
